Pro Tools is stopping, with and error like "CPU usage is holding of USB audio. Remove plug ins or tracks, or increase HW buffer size."

This problem and its solution were discussed in a thread on the old DUC (Digidesign User Conference). The solution, in short, is to slim your Extensions set and turn off Ethernet:

MAKE SURE the ethernet port is turned off. Go into the TCP/IP settings -> Edit ->user mode -> toggle to the advanced setting. The choose "options" in the bottom right, and inactivate TCP/IP altogether - this avoids periodic CPU cycles being stolen to poll the port for network IDs. A major curse in USB audio.”
